In Senath, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we're specialists in hair testing and have centers nationwide to conduct hair tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used for testing. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers. Their key advantage is a 90-day drug use detection window and a rigorous collection process that makes cheating difficult. However, for assessing recent use within five days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair retains a historical record of these substances by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair sampling is uncomplicated, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of around 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional options, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advised. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing for a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This stage includes confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data entry required that the electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drug misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive findings need confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If the Screening stage indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower quantities compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex approach to execute.

The confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the guidelines of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to deceive, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It uncovers patterns of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate usage: It takes around 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Even though often mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
