Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Shoal Creek Drive, Missouri. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our specialty in hair analysis is unmatched. With nationwide testing centers, we can conduct hair tests effectively. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored analysis options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has seen increased use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation services. The primary advantage is the detection span; up to 90 days with a monitored collection process, making it hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for determining drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term usage data by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a use pattern for alcohol and drugs spanning up to 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A hair section measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in thickness) from near the scalp, yields about 100mg—ideal for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, extended panels, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" covers all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential phases in the lab processing of drug testing results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial evaluation for drug presence. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening needs further validation for court acceptability. Samples that test positive initially must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drug concentrations are removed from the hair at lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral samples), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation criteria and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Cheat-resistant: Hair tests are highly resistant to tampering, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical insight: They show a drug use pattern over a span, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs typically appear in hair 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair testing often incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors, such as hair color and growth rates, can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
