Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is available from Accredited Drug Testing in Silex, Missouri. Our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, ensuring you can perform a hair drug or alcohol test across various cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for analysis. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to custom testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over recent years in drug testing practices. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary monitoring commonly use hair follicle tests. They offer the key advantage of detecting drug use up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making them difficult to alter. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are recognized as an effective approach for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands offer a prolonged timeline of drug use by embedding indicators within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use over roughly a 3-month duration. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (approximately the dimension of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If head hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the early handling of a sample into a lab's system, including checking if the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data inputs not included by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial fast assessment for drug presence. While it is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive screen demands confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lesser concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a wash as needed before confirmation. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter period of detection.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to affect the results of a hair drug test, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Reveals usage history: It can display a history of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be more costly compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Silex, MO, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy. Hair tests provide a more extended detection window, capturing drug use over months, compared to urine's short-term detection. This long-term insight is valuable for employers and officials who require comprehensive assessments of individuals' drug use histories, making hair testing a preferred method.

Among the key advantages of hair over urine testing in Silex, MO, is the robustness in detecting a range of substances with high reliability. Hair testing's accuracy surpasses that of urine tests, given its inherent resistance to short-term lifestyle changes that might affect urine test results. This strength offers a more complete picture of substance use, making it an ideal choice for critical evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Silex, MO, boasts an extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
