In Silver Creek, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we are experts in hair testing with facilities nationwide, ready to execute a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing services.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a regular method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and those working in Substance Abuse fields often prefer it over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are employed by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug use policies, judicial systems, and among probationary individuals. The main advantage of such testing is its extended drug detection window—up to 90 days—alongside a supervised collection process making the tests almost immune to deceit. However, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day time frame, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a robust technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month history of alcohol and drug usage. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. When discussing head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps involved in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for abusive drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is provisionally positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Affirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Yields historical insights: It can provide a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Silver Creek, MO, hair follicle tests are proving their superiority over traditional urine tests. Advantages like longer detection windows and reduced chances of result tampering highlight hair tests as more reliable and accurate.

For employers enforcing drug-free policies, hair testing's sophisticated technology offers clear benefits over urine tests, with its ability to pinpoint substance use with greater precision.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Silver Creek, MO, find hair follicle testing invaluable for its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This comprehensive period offers a clearer picture of an individual's substance history.

With its long-term detection advantages, hair testing is adept at revealing recurrent drug use patterns, ensuring a more reliable assessment of an employee's or candidate's history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Concerns over sample adulteration are significantly reduced with hair follicle tests in Silver Creek, MO. Tamper-resistance is a key feature that provides stakeholders with complete confidence in the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
