In Smithton, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. We excel in hair and alcohol tests, providing services Nationwide through our myriad testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required for a hair test. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG and offer specialized options for various needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in recent times for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are often requesting these tests over traditional urine tests. Those enforcing strict no-drug policies in workplaces, or monitoring individuals on probation, benefit from hair tests due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days. They are observed during collection, rendering them nearly impossible to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective instrument in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extended retrospective timeline of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, this kind of sample can reveal an approximately 3-month history of alcohol and drug intake. Hair samples are easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can furnish 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and test panels exceeding 10, a recommended 150mg of the sample is encouraged. We advise measuring the sample weight with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to the scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other variants (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary entry of a sample into the laboratory's management system. This includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial overview for signs of drug abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage on most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent validation.

If the Screening phase indicates a sample could be positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are then isolated from the hair at much lower levels compared to other practices (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing a more challenging methodology to conduct.

Positive results from screening stages undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples initially suspected positive are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can capture drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical insights: It can depict a usage pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternate testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
