At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Spanish Lake, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and with facilities available nationwide, including all cities, we can conduct a hair test for you. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is sufficient for testing. Hair analyses can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various specialized tests.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common for conducting drug tests. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This test is favored by employers upholding strict drug-free policies, the court system, and those on probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its ability to detect drugs over an extended period, up to 90 days, through direct observation, making tampering nearly impossible. Still, urine tests remain the optimal choice for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. It offers an extended history by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a 3-month detection span for substances. Easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward for shipping, hair samples are ideal.

A sample of 1.5 inches, around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg, the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG add-ons or those over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing entails four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. It involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that wasn’t handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drug presence. Although it is cost-effective and can rule out drug use efficiently, a positive screen needs confirmation for court applicability. Samples giving presumptively positive results require additional confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, delivering more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical patterns: Reveals patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Influences like hair color and personal differences in growth can impact drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to urine testing, hair follicle testing in Spanish Lake, MO, provides a superior assurance of detection. Hair tests boast remarkable detection abilities and are unmatched in reliability. While urine tests can sometimes miss substances or be manipulated, hair follicle testing maintains higher scrutiny standards, resulting in more trustworthy outcomes. This makes it a preferred choice among employers seeking thorough drug screening processes.

Extended Detection Window

One of the prime advantages of hair follicle testing in Spanish Lake, MO, is its extensive detection window. Unlike traditional methods that detect substance use for a limited time, hair tests can reveal usage up to 90 days prior. This prolonged detection capability offers employers a detailed insight into an employee's or applicant’s past behavior, supporting better-informed hiring and management decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are known for their robustness against tampering, offering significant advantages in Spanish Lake, MO. By avoiding pitfalls common in traditional testing, like sample swapping or dilution, hair testing ensures that results are credible and reliable. Hair samples undergo strict handling procedures, making it extremely difficult for individuals to alter outcomes, thus preserving the integrity of the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
