Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stewartsville, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers located nationwide offering complete testing services. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, and in many instances, body hair is an alternative. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a staple in drug testing protocols. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is preferred by employers who enforce zero-tolerance policies, used in court systems, and for individuals on probation due to its extended detection capabilities that span up to 90 days, with observation during sample collection, making it extremely difficult to tamper. Despite this, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent usage within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, resist alteration, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and validation. For EtG tests, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair might be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample indicates positivity in the Screening stage, extra hair is retrieved from the primary specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is surveyed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's quite difficult to falsify a hair drug test, increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests in Stewartsville, MO, are clear. Hair testing offers a more accurate detection of drugs, reducing the chances of false negatives. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
