Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Sweet Springs, Missouri. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we operate testing centers nationwide. Hair of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is typically required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers customizable options.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have become increasingly popular for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor this method over standard urine tests. They are implemented by companies with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The advantage lies in its 90-day detection period, observed collection process, and low potential for tampering. For recent drug use, urine tests offer superior accuracy within the first 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair records a prolonged history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection window spanning up to three months for both alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) positioned nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For testing EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, the collection of an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, it references scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a laboratory drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and dispatch, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive screening result must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples appearing positive upon initial Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

For samples tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging process to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed for confirming any positive screening outcomes. All samples presumed positive undergo a wash before confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which offer a briefer window.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the results' reliability.
  • Gives historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not solely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection of recent use: Drugs become observable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: The test commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests" actually analyzes the hair strand, not the under-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
