Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Sycamore Hills, Missouri. If you need a test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in this area and have centers in cities across the U.S. that can conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prominent. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists often require hair tests over urine ones. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The advantage of a hair test is its long detection period, up to 90 days, overseen in a monitored setting, making it almost foolproof. However, urine tests remain more effective for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drugs and alcohol use. Hair strands retain long-term markers of these substances by preserving biomarkers within their fiber structure. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 90-day detection period for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) collected close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or over 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weight measurement. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in lab processing for a drug test involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a specimen is incorporated into the lab system. This step includes ensuring the specimen was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment to check for drug presence. Although it’s an economically viable method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation before legal admissibility. Any sample tentatively positive at the Screening stage must undergo further verification.

When a sample tests preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further Examination. In this phase, drug compounds are retrieved from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or saliva), hence hair drug analysis remains one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Any positive result from Screening is verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as applicable. Throughout, the laboratory process from Accessioning to Verification is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Evading a hair drug test is difficult, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers usage trends: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing options.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors like hair shade and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Clarification: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the actual examination is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
