Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tallapoosa, Missouri. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with facilities nationwide available to conduct a hair test. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing specifications.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug assessments. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are popular among employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The foremost advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for drug use, typically reaching up to 90 days, with samples acquired under supervision, making it almost foolproof. Nevertheless, for determining drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has garnered a reputation as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a record keeper for alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken close to the head, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. A jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be collected. When talking about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial input of a specimen into a lab’s system, confirming the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a swift preliminary check for drug abuse. While it is an economical way to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive result from screening requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate further verification.

Upon a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is among the hardest to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are deemed presumptively positive undergo a washing process before confirmation, if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug utilization for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceit: It is exceptionally challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can disclose a timeline of drug usage rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unfit for recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the testing is done on the hair strand and not the hair follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
