In Tarkio, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If hair or alcohol testing is required, Accredited Drug Testing offers hair testing services, with centers available in cities across the nation that can perform this test. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized further.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Many organizations, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer these over regular urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies and legal authorities find hair follicle testing beneficial. They provide an extended detection period of up to 90 days, offer observation during collection, and are nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests are still preferred to detect drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand can encapsulate biomarkers, offering an extended record of alcohol and drug presence. When strands are clipped near the scalp, they can reveal a detection range of nearly three months for various substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch length comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred amount for screening and verification. For higher panel tests or EtG supplementary tests, 150mg of sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. By “head hair,” we specifically mean scalp hair. Conversely, "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample within a lab’s framework. This procedure verifies the correct sealing and sending of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is an initial quick examination for drug presence. While it serves as an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, positive findings require confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with a preliminary positive status in Screening necessitate further Confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. Here, drug components are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underlying the complexity of hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing offers the ability to observe drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating resistance: Tampering with hair drug tests is exceedingly difficult, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Provides a timeline: It allows for an understanding of drug use patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Substances become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
