Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Theodosia, Missouri. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have facilities in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice for most tests. These hair tests can be customized to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over other methods. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer it over standard urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, with observed collection making it highly tamper-resistant. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective resource for identifying alcohol and drug usage. It offers an extensive historical view of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers in the individual hair fibers. By obtaining samples near the scalp, hair permits an approximate 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. This method is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, representing the prime sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is prudent to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In situations where scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be procured. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a laboratory's system through initial processing. This phase ensures the sample has been properly sealed and transported, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although it serves as an economical method to exclude drug intake for most samples, positive screening results necessitate confirmation to be legally accepted. Presumptively positive samples during Screening require further confirmation.

Upon presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this process, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug testing as the most challenging technique to implement.

Confirmatory analysis of any positive screening is pursued using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples that yield a presumptive positive are subjected to a cleansing process before confirmation, as needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a narrower detection window.
  • Challenge to falsify: Hair drug tests are considerably harder to deceive, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: They facilitate a timeline of drug use behavior over an extended timeframe, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detection in hair emerges approximately 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Despite the common name "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
