In Thornfield, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in this testing with centers available in cities across the nation to conduct the procedure. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed. Our hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method for drug detection. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as probation requirements, leverage these tests. A key advantage is the extended detection window, accurately identifying drug use for up to 90 days, an almost foolproof testing approach. However, urine tests remain most effective for recent drug intake within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, quite hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair might be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps within the laboratory processing of drug test results encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning kicks off the processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening provides an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Should Screening yield a presumptive positive, a secondary confirmation is essential.

In cases of presumptive positives at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The meticulous laboratory protocol from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes review in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It allows for an interpretation of an individual's drug use pattern over a timeline, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A span of approximately 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
