Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Tiffin, Missouri. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing, we are experts in hair testing and operate facilities across all cities nationwide that can conduct these exams. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has grown significantly in recent years. It's often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine testing methods. Hair testing is ideal for employers with strict anti-drug policies, the judicial system, and for those on probation. Its key advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, achieved through supervised sample collection, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting most recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has earned recognition as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged historical record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary testing, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Measurement of the sample with a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is a suitable alternative. When discussing head hair, only scalp hair is considered. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means of ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be court-admissible. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a significantly lowered concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening ranks as the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary prior to confirmation. The full laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, making the outcomes more trustworthy.
  • Provides historical data: It can depict drug usage trends over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically more costly compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Conditions such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
