Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Tindall, Missouri. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is available at numerous testing facilities across the country capable of administering a hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is generally needed. Hair tests can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent years, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent for drug testing. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are preferring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with stringent anti-drug policies, justice systems, and probation services. The major advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection period for drug use—typically up to 90 days—collected in a closely monitored process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers in their fibers as they grow, offering a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drugs over time. By collecting hair near the scalp, one can achieve roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch collection of around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, using 150mg of the sample is advisable. Measuring the sample on a jewelry scale is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. It entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in the bulk of samples, any positive screen result must be validated to be permissible in legal proceedings. All samples that screen presumptively positive require additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most complex method to carry out.

Confirmation of any presumptively positive screen is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to evade: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to falsification, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a usage pattern over time, rather than just indicating recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become identifiable in hair within about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
