Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Town and Country, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with centers across cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing in drug testing methods has increased. Many employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers. The main advantage includes a longer detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observed conditions, and it is virtually uncheatable. For drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still prove to be the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The growth of hair encapsulates biomarkers within its strands, providing an extended historical record of substance use. When harvested near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of roughly 90 days for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample size for analysis and confirmation is a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair is permissible. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test proceeds through four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves registering a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and incorporates any additional data not entered via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Despite being an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening require a secondary verification.

For samples indicating a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower levels than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex approach to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter duration offered by urine tests.
  • Complex to deceive: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test ensures more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," testing actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle embedded beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
