Acclaimed Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Urich, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body is applicable. Hair evaluations can reveal drug, alcohol/ETG footprints or be tailored for other hair assessments.

Recently, drug examination methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair assessments over standard urine ones. These tests are indispensable for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its prolonged drug detection timeframe of up to 90 days, observed during collection, making evasion nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for recent (last 5 days) substance use detection, urine tests maintain unparalleled accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective method, hair testing is a robust approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow, hair documents a lengthy history of substance usage. Positioned near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over a period extending up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, its alteration is challenging, and it is convenient to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG inclusions and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is advisable. A jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair not be present, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. References to head hair denote solely scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory's drug testing procedure is broken down into four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit substances. While Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. Samples displaying a presumptive positive result during Screening require subsequent verification.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo washing prior to confirmation where necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: The complexity in tampering with a hair drug test enhances the precision of its results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a sequence of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for detecting recent consumption: Identification of drugs in hair typically requires 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth disparities can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself targets the hair shaft and not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
