Offering thorough hair follicle substance testing services, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Verona, MO. Whether it be for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities located in every city nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Results can reveal substance use, be it drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored analyses.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have increased in preference among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over urine tests. These are vital for organizations adhering to strict no-drug-use policies, judicial purposes, or for individuals under probation. Hair follicle tests boast a longer detection span—up to 90 days—making them hard to manipulate. However, for drug usage within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain exceptionally precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair provides an extended record of alcohol and drug consumption by trapping markers in the hair strand fibers as they grow. When hair is taken near the scalp, it offers up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp gives 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. When speaking of head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug testing includes four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This involves checking the sample’s seal and shipping condition, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any absent data entry from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legal in court. Samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Detects drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to cheat: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, providing more reliable outcomes.
  • Gives historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
