Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug testing in Vinita Park, Missouri. If you require a hair or alcohol drug test, we are experts in hair testing, with centers nationwide equipped for this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers adhering to zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. A major advantage is its extended detection window, which can span up to 90 days, is observed during collection, and is resistant to tampering. For drug use within the last 5 days, however, the urine test remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed historical record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibrous material of the elongating hair shaft. When collected from a scalp-proximate area, hair samples offer around a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drug presence. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section composed of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest employing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable mass of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for obtaining a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes preliminary processing within a laboratory's system. This step verifies the proper sealing and transport of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and incorporates any additional information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial assessment checks for drugs of abuse. Despite its cost-effectiveness for excluding drug use in most samples, a Screening-positive result requires confirmation for courtroom validity. Samples that return a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a presumptive positive emerges from the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive specimens undergo a cleansing process before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted adhering to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Archives usage patterns: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over extended periods, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
