Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle substance testing in Wellington, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair analysis, with facilities across the nation that can conduct these tests. Typically, you will need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body. Hair tests can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

In recent times, the technique for administering drug tests increasingly favors hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists mandate hair tests over conventional urine assessments. Hair follicle evaluations cater to employers with strict drug-free protocols, judicial systems, and those on probation. A key advantage is their extended detection period, usually spanning up to 90 days, with collection done under observation, making them highly tamper-proof. Despite this, for identifying drug use in the prior 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for uncovering both drug and alcohol consumption. The hair shafts capture biological markers within the growing strands, offering an extended timeline of substance use. When sampled closely to the scalp, hair delivers an approximate three-month detection span for both alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp results in 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is preferable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If the scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair might be collected. When discussing head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The procedure for laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This involves ensuring the sample is sealed and dispatched appropriately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite manual data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result from Screening needs verification to be valid in legal settings. Every sample identified as potentially positive during Screening necessitates subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show potential positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive Screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples indicated as potentially positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage over a 90-day timeframe, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Low susceptibility to deceit: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to circumvent, enhancing outcome reliability.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides an account of drug use trends over time, exceeding mere recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of indicating recent usage: Typically, drugs become traceable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
