Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in White Oak, Missouri. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. We have facilities in every major city across the country where we can carry out these tests. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for testing, being favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. These tests are particularly used by entities with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and for those on probation. The major advantage is its longer detection window, going up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair encases biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can yield around a 90-day detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (like a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be sourced. Head hair, in this context, refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into the laboratory's system. This phase confirms that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a cursory examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers an economic approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample garners a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can discern drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to subvert: It’s exceedingly tough to undermine a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Historical usage data: It can uncover a pattern of drug consumption over an extended period, beyond just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There's a 5-7 day delay before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur greater costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", this examination actually analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
