In Winona, Missouri, residents benefit from the comprehensive hair follicle drug testing provided by Accredited Drug Testing. Whether you’re seeking a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in this area with facilities available across cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored test choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method over traditional urine testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for a hair test. This method is favored by employers with strict drug policies, court systems, and probation officers. A key advantage is its extended detection window for substance use, typically up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process, reducing the chance of sample tampering. However, for detection within 5 days, urine remains the most precise testing option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional layers, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilization of a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an alternative. When discussing head hair, it refers only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the lab analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of the sample into the lab’s framework. This procedure includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and couriered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplementing any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a swift preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, though a positive finding necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require further verification.

In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair analysis a challenging procedure.

Any positive outcome in Screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire testing process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It indicates a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • High cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair development impact the concentration of drug markers in the hair.

Note: Frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
