Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Wyatt, Missouri. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, we specialize in hair analysis with locations across the nation equipped to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or the body can be used. Our hair tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, the popularity of drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently use these tests. The hair follicle test's major advantage is its extended drug usage detection period, up to 90 days, through an observed collection that's tough to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still provide the best results.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair stores a prolonged history of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can yield a detection window of approximately three months for both alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil in diameter) taken nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If there is no scalp hair available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary procedures in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's database. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocates a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completes any extra data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a rapid preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be verified to hold up in a legal setting. Samples that test presumptively positive during screening require secondary confirmation.

For any sample that tests presumptively positive during screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is rigorously checked under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Tracks usage over time: It offers insight into drug usage patterns over an extended period rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Results may vary: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually performed on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wyatt, MO, hair follicle testing proves superior to urine tests due to its enhanced detection capabilities and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent drug use, hair tests provide a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use history over several months. This makes hair testing the more reliable option for employers and agencies looking to maintain a drug-free environment.

The accuracy of hair tests surpasses that of urine tests, reducing the likelihood of false negatives. As a result, employers can confidently use hair testing to enforce strict drug-free policies. This ensures a safer and more productive workplace, free from the uncertainties of traditional urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Wyatt, MO, reveals substance use over a period of up to 90 days, making it invaluable for employers. This prolonged timeline offers a comprehensive view of an applicant or employee's drug history, beyond the capabilities of other shorter-term methods.

With hair follicle testing, employers gain insight into consistent drug use patterns rather than just recent usage. This information helps organizations make informed decisions regarding hiring and maintaining a safe, drug-free environment, ultimately fostering a healthier workplace culture.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Wyatt, MO, hair follicle tests significantly minimize the possibility of sample tampering, providing results that are difficult to dispute. Unlike other methods that risk adulteration, hair testing maintains integrity by offering an observed collection process that ensures accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
