Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Agency, Montana. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol screen, our expertise lies in hair examinations, with nationwide centers available to conduct tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair samples are tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other testing requirements.

Recently, the inclination towards employing hair follicle drug tests has increased. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are favored by employers with rigid drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The significant advantage of hair testing is the extensive detection timeframe—up to 90 days—carried out under observation, offering high security. Yet, urine tests remain precise for detecting immediate drug usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by encasing biomarkers within its fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can supply a detection timeframe of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample composed of roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair might be used. When talking about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair incorporates all other hair variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the starting phase where a sample is entered into the lab’s system. This involves checking that the sample was safely sealed and transported, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and completing any further data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid legally. Any samples that test as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test as presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is sourced from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Captures historical usage: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Surpasses Urine Testing in Agency, MT
Hair testing boasts superior advantages over urine testing, especially in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
