In Big Hole Basin, Montana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we offer services across numerous cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required. Hair tests give reliable results for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has grown in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose this over standard urine tests due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days and secure collection process, minimizing the chance of fraud. However, urine tests remain accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments beyond 10 panels, it is suggested to use 150mg of the sample. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory processing of a substance test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample is securely sealed and sent appropriately, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for the presence of illegal substances. Although Screening provides a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are isolated from the hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All predefined positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
