Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Clyde Park, Montana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing has a focus on hair testing, with centers available in cities across the Nation capable of conducting the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Hair tests offer analysis for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent years, the trend towards using hair follicle drug tests for substance detection has increased. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are now turning to hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by organizations with strict drug-free policies, as well as courts and probation officers. The main advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected through a supervised process, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a comprehensive history of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can deliver up to about a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validating. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent portion of body hair may be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test result in the lab involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with processing a sample into a laboratory’s system, ensuring it was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples that are presumed positive during Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

In case a sample is presumed positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies to conduct.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for a duration of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests only offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Detecting drugs in hair typically requires 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
