Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services in East Missoula, Montana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head is needed, or body hair can be used. Hair tests are versatile, analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, there's been a notable shift towards using hair follicle drug tests for substance screening. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, or individuals under probation. The key advantage is its longer detection window, up to 90 days, with a monitored collection that is hard to manipulate. Yet, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a powerful means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a number 2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which serves as the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's workflow. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an expedited preliminary check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for courtroom admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to circumvent a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Tracks historical patterns: It offers a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rate can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle embedded in the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
