Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive drug and alcohol testing through hair follicle analysis in Elliston, Montana. Specializing in hair assessments, our testing centers, which are spread nationwide, offer this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair follicle testing accommodates drug, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increasingly been incorporated into drug testing protocols. Employers with strict drug policies, legal systems, and rehabilitation experts now often prioritize hair testing over urine tests. Its primary advantage lies in its extended detection range, reaching up to 90 days, gathered through regulated collection procedures, making evasion extremely difficult. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged account of alcohol and substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, it provides a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, tough to manipulate, and straightforward to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil’s circumference) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for thorough testing. For EtG tests, additional panels beyond 10 require 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair is an alternative. The term head hair specifically indicates scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory analysis of drug test results is comprised of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially processing a sample into the lab's database. This step includes confirming that the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any data entry tasks not handled by an electronic tracking system.

Screening consists of a rapid preliminary check for drug usage. Though Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening undergo a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction process. During this step, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower levels than other methods such as urine or saliva tests, making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of positive results from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. Throughout the process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, the procedures conform to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is nearly impossible to falsify results of a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical usage: It provides an insight into drug use patterns over time, rather than only recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug concentration outcomes in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the examination actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicles below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
