If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing in the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples with presumptive positive results from the Screening require additional confirmation.

For a sample with a presumptive positive screening result, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS conducts the Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
