Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

This process includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening stands as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required.
