Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Floweree, Montana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing covers locations across all cities nationwide, capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other specialized hair testing solutions.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has often included a hair follicle test. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now demand a hair drug test instead of the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests are employed by zero-tolerance drug use employers, courts, and those on probation due to their benefits. The leading advantage is its longer detection timeframe for drugs, generally reaching up to 90 days, executed through an observed collection process, and nearly resistant to tampering. However, for drug usage detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. The process of collecting hair samples is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to quantify the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When specifying head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This process ensures that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not have provided.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive result from this stage requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Thus, any samples with a presumptive positive outcome in Screening necessitate a further Confirmation step.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this step, compounds are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies to implement.

Confirmation of any positive result in Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive presumptively are cleaned before Confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards for ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection capabilities: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to falsification: Hair drug tests are very difficult to tamper with, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: This test can reveal patterns of substance use over time, not only recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
