Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services within Forest Hill Village, Montana. Specializing in hair tests, we operate centers across the nation capable of conducting such tests. To proceed, individuals typically need to have hair lengths ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or alternatively from their body. Our tests can gauge drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

The last few years have seen an uptick in utilizing hair follicle drug examinations for testing purposes. An increasing number of employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over the standard urine-based tests. This method appeals to employers adhering to zero-tolerance drug rules, legal authorities, and individuals on probation. Its advantage lies in its extended drug detection timeframe, which can span up to 90 days post-use, is conducted under observation, and is highly resistant to manipulation. However, for identifying recent drug use within a five-day timeframe, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a historical record of alcohol and other substances by ensnaring biomarkers in its growing strands. When collected from the scalp, hair can provide up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimum quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal amount of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the initial introduction of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any extra data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that test positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample registers a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is utilized from the initial sample for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are obtained from hair at a far lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex method to execute.

To validate any positive screening outcome, testing via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS is performed. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory evaluation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can trace drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It highlights a drug use pattern over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although colloquially known as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
