Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Forsyth, Montana. When you need a hair drug or alcohol test, rely on Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair testing, with testing sites in every city across the country to perform these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head's crown or elsewhere typically suffices. Hair can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly used for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often mandate hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers prefer hair follicle tests due to their longer detection period—up to 90 days, observable collection, and difficulty to falsify. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands' fibers. When taken close to the scalp, this method allows for a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, approximately consisting of 200 strands (around the circumference of a #2 pencil), yields 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both screening and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental phases in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves confirming the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for illegal substances. While it is an economical way to eliminate drug consumption from most samples, any positive result requires Confirmation to be accepted legally. Sample results that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a confirmatory test.

If a result is tentatively positive during Screening, more hair will be drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleansed before Confirmation if necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests offer a detection period of drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timespan of urine tests.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: It allows for analysis of drug usage over time, not merely recent behaviors.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other alternatives.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the procedure assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
