Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Smith, Montana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, turn to Accredited Drug Testing, which specializes in hair testing and has locations nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the crown or the body. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific needs.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a preferred method for drug screening. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are vital for employers with strict drug-free policies, as well as courts and probation officers. The main advantage is its longer detection window, spanning up to 90 days, and the test's supervised collection process reduces cheating. However, for recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair retains a detailed history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG additions and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It’s suggested to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening will need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to tamper with results of a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: Can indicate a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis generally costs more than other testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
