Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Gilman, Montana. If you require drug or alcohol hair testing, our focus is hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to administer these tests. On the head's crown, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are typically required, although body hair may be an option. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle tests in drug testing protocols has increased. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer them over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary cases often choose hair tests. A significant advantage is its broader detection window, up to 90 days, performed under observation, making cheating very difficult. However, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a long-term record of substances by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection window for various substances, including alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or exams exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in a lab involves the stages of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a sample into the lab system. This step includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective, any positive result from the Screening phase must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set aside for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other sample types such as urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug testing is notably intricate to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete processing of samples from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have a detection period lasting up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Efforts to tamper with a hair drug test are extremely challenging, translating to more reliable outcomes.
  • Reflects usage history: Provides a comprehensive timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
