Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle testing in Helena Valley Northwest, Montana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair examinations, with centers available in cities nationwide to perform these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is sufficient for the test. Hair evaluations can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for checking substance use. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse specialists often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers endorsing strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation officers favor hair testing due to its longer detection capabilities, spanning up to 90 days, its supervised collection method, and minimal opportunities for manipulation, though urine tests still excel when screening recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become a recognized method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a medium capturing biomarkers within its fibers, offering a longitudinal history of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to harvest, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) at the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be accessed, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into the system of a laboratory. This step includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing additional data entry not supplied by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening acts as a rapid preliminary assessment for drug substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-acceptable. Samples with positive indications in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is carried out using methodologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screens can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug testing is highly resistant to cheating, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It delivers a timeline of drug use, showcasing a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variance can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
