Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Helena West Side, Montana. For those needing drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized services with centers nationwide, ready to conduct hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or as part of customized options.

In recent trends, drug testing methods increasingly rely on hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests rather than traditional urine screens. Organizations maintaining zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services prefer hair testing for its extended detection span, reaching up to 90 days. Although urine tests remain most effective for detecting drug use within the last five days, hair tests offer a nearly tamper-proof, observed collection process.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of substance use, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, the hair can indicate drug or alcohol use for as long as a three-month period. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage in which a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional information not catered for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples with a presumptive positive screen need further validation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than those in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging process.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests have the ability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It can outline drug usage trends over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Helena West Side, MT
In Helena West Side, MT, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy. While urine tests work well for recent drug use, hair tests reveal drug consumption over a longer period, making them more reliable. Their ability to detect traces of drugs used within the last 90 days ensures that employers get a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance habits.

This longer detection window gives organizations an advantage, providing a more complete picture of potential employees’ drug use. As opposed to urine tests, which may miss short-term abstainers, hair tests offer a thorough report that adds value through insightful and precise assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Helena West Side, MT
Hair follicle drug tests boast a lengthy detection window, up to 90 days, offering a detailed overview of substance history. In Helena West Side, MT, employers can access this advantage for a fuller understanding of potential employee's past drug use. This extends beyond the shorter window of urine tests, allowing for more comprehensive evaluations.

The significant detection range of hair follicle tests captures nuances in patterns of use that would be undetected in shorter-term screenings. This feature assists in making hiring decisions based on a complete substance use profile, aligning operational standards to drug-free workplace expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
