Accredited Drug Testing offers all-encompassing hair follicle drug testing in Joliet, Montana. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with centers positioned in every city Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been adopted as the preferred method. Numerous employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair drug testing over the traditional urine method. Employing these tests primarily benefits employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary oversight. The extended detection span of up to 90 days and the observed collection process make it nearly tamper-proof, although urine tests still reign supreme for recent drug usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can display a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, tough to alter, and convenient to transport.

A hair specimen measuring 1.5 inches and containing about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab’s workflow, which includes confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient manner to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally valid. Any samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining why hair drug analysis is the most complex technique to conduct.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation, as required. The entire laboratory process involving Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug-testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the levels of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
