In Lima, Montana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, although body hair can be used. Hair testing can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has increasingly become the preferred method for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often mandate hair testing instead of the usual urine tests. This method is favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies and legal authorities. A significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days. The collection is observed, making it almost immune to tampering. However, for detecting very recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair pertains to scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial sample processing within a laboratory’s setup, involving verification of the sample's seal and shipping status, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary examination for illicit drugs. Although Screening is economically advantageous for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen warrants Confirmation for court admissibility. Any presumpively positive Screening samples necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a Screening outcome is presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating why hair drug screening presents as a challenging methodology.

Positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing, as required. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection period.
  • Difficult to compromise: Cheating in a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals patterns of drug usage spanning over time, beyond just recent involvement.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically entail higher costs compared to alternate drug testing solutions.
  • Outcome variability: Influences such as hair color and personal growth rates may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
