Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis services in Lockwood, Montana. If you require evaluation for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is supported by our facilities across various cities nationwide, capable of conducting such tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug assessment has become more prevalent for drug testing, overtaking the standard urine test. Employers, legal authorities, and addiction experts prefer hair tests. These are predominantly chosen by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation individuals. The main advantage is a longer detection span of up to 90 days, with the collection observed, making it almost fraud-proof. Yet, for identifying drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term history of substances due to biomarkers becoming embedded in the strands as hair grows. When taken near the scalp, this method can yield up to a 3-month period for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair samples are straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair is suitable. When discussing head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial input of a sample into the lab’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any missing data entries that are not provided electronically.

Screening entails a preliminary check for the presence of illicit substances. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a Screening positive must be verified for judicial purposes. Samples with potential positive results from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening process, additional hair from the initial collection is extracted for the Extraction process. This involves isolating substances from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), thereby making hair drug testing the most complex method.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positive outcomes are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to manipulate: There is a high difficulty in tampering with a hair drug test, improving the reliability of results.
  • Shows usage history: It can outline a timeline of substance use over time, rather than just indicate recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing practices.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Often termed as “hair follicle tests”, the procedure examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
