Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Logan, Montana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair testing with facilities available nationwide, ensuring you can get a hair test wherever needed. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored options.

The trend toward employing hair follicle drug tests has been increasing over the years. Many employers, judicial systems, and specialists in Substance Abuse are opting for hair strand tests instead of the traditional urine tests. These tests suit employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation as they offer a detection window up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it hard to tamper with. However, for detection of drug use in the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a potent instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and other drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect specimen for both screening and verification. For EtG tests, supplementary checks, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weight measurement. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair may be acquired. When we refer to head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes preliminary processing in a laboratory's system. This step confirms the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any leftover data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid evaluation for abuse substances. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for legal admissibility. Any samples exhibiting a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate secondary validation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge in methodology.

Validation of any positive screening findings involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for nearly 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection duration.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring greater accuracy in the results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can showcase a pattern of drug use over an interval, instead of only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the amount of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Excels Over Urine Testing in Logan, MT
The advantages of hair testing versus traditional urine tests include superior detection accuracy and reliability, making it the preferred choice for many. Hair tests are less invasive and harder to manipulate, ensuring trustworthy results every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
