Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Loma, Montana. For those in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we are experts in hair analysis and have testing facilities located all across the nation, ready to conduct hair examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the scalp or body, to carry out these tests. Hair analyses are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, the frequency of using hair follicle drug tests has risen for screening purposes. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug testing over the traditional urine method. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary environments prefer hair follicle testing due to its extended detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, and its almost impossible-to-tamper observed collection process. Yet, for recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. Collected from near the scalp, it can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, an equal volume of body hair may be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid inspection for recreational drugs. It is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, however, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Samples with presumptively positive results in Screening require a secondary verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positive findings during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is observed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect for shorter periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It's almost impossible to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Provides a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection limitation: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
