Molt, Montana is where Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing, we maintain testing centers across every city in the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices for analysis. Tests can detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more common in recent times, preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over standard urine tests. This method is chosen by entities enforcing strict drug use policies. It provides a detection period for drug use that extends up to 90 days, involves an observed collection process, and is nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain most effective for detecting very recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection span of three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a proportional amount of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair strictly means scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary entry of a sample into the laboratory system. It involves ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any further data entry absent in an electronic custody chain.

Screening allows for an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive must be validated to stand in court. Samples with preliminary positive results during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumption of positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase involves drug extraction from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have a 90-day detection capability, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing the validity of the results.
  • Historial data provision: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, as opposed to only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair and urine tests in Molt, MT reveals the conspicuous advantage of hair follicle testing. While urine tests are standard, hair tests exhibit superior detection accuracy. The latter is less prone to contamination and substitution, while offering a large detection window. This makes it an ideal choice for institutions that require high reliability in their drug testing procedures.

Extended Detection Window

In Molt, MT, hair follicle testing is reputed for its extensive detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This period offers a comprehensive overview of a person's substance use history, invaluable for employers assessing potential and current employees. Such insight aids in making informed decisions regarding workplace safety and policy adherence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The robustness of hair follicle testing extends to its tamper-resistant nature, a significant advantage in Molt, MT. Unlike urine samples, hair tests are difficult to adulterate or substitute, assuring employers and authorities of the integrity of the samples. This reliability makes hair testing a trustworthy method amidst attempts of sample manipulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
