Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Moore, Montana. For hair or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair analysis, providing services in numerous locations across the country. Typically, a 1.5 to 2-inch hair sample from the head or body is needed. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Recently, drug testing trends have increasingly favored hair follicle tests over other methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is employed by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary cases. The key advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, which is monitored directly during collection and is difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying substance use. Hair captures an extended history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating markers within the hair fibers. When harvested close to the scalp, it provides a detection range of around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Synopsis

There are four key stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This stage involves confirming the sample’s sealing and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening offers an initial rapid examination for substance abuse. While Screening is economically efficient for negating drug use in most samples, a positive result requires validation for court acceptance. Samples that test positively in Screening need further verification.

For samples with an initial positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This stage removes drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), which explains the complexity of hair drug screening.

Validation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a positive presumption undergo cleansing before validation as needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter intervals.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, leading to more credible outcomes.
  • Displays usage trends: It shows patterns of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
