Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Niarada, Montana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair examinations, with testing facilities available nationwide to conduct hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or, in many cases, body hairs can be used. Hair samples are assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Over recent years, drug test methods more commonly incorporate hair follicle analysis. Multiple employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts are now opting for hair drug evaluations over the classic urine tests. Hair follicle drug analysis forms an integral part of zero-tolerance drug policies by employers, judicial mandates, and probation protocols. Hair testing's major advantage is its extended detection window for drug usage, spanning up to 90 days, with observed collection practices, rendering them nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting substance use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances through the entrapment of biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sourced from near the scalp, hair may offer up to a roughly 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal hair sample consists of a 1.5-inch section with approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels over 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equal amount of body hair can be collected. Scalp hair refers exclusively to head hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core stages in processing drug test outcomes in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial preparation of a sample for the laboratory system. This step includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and properly sent, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional information not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of concern. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set up for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are removed from hair in lesser concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is more complex to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Shows historical usage: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than other testing methods for drugs.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand and not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
