In Park City, Montana, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in this method, our centers nationwide are equipped to handle hair drug or alcohol testing needs. If hair samples from the head aren't an option, body hair may suffice. Hair testing accommodates tests for various substances and provides more options than traditional methods.

An increased reliance on hair follicle testing for substance detection has emerged recently. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for these over classic urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal where zero-tolerance policies exist, providing a detection window of up to 90 days. Urine tests remain the most precise for evaluating recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations are increasingly recognized as a robust means for assessing drug and alcohol consumption. The hair serves as a repository for enduring evidence of alcohol and drug utilization by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an observation period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory's drug test result processing encompasses four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a specimen into the lab's system. This includes validating the sample's sealing and shipment, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing extra data input not provided by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance use. It is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in most samples, yet a positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Samples that appear positive during Screening require secondary validation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the most challenges.

Positive Screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to verification, as needed. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes reviews under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests provide a shorter period.
  • Resistant to deceit: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It delivers a longitudinal view of drug use patterns rather than just recent engagements.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the process evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Park City, MT, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection and reliability. Hair tests offer extended detection timelines ranging up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that primarily track recent substance use. This broader detection leads to a more comprehensive review and ensures that testers have a clearer view of an individual's substance usage history.

Compared to the more traditional urine tests, hair follicle tests provide unmatched accuracy. Park City, MT, trusts this method for its robustness against false results and difficulty in undermining the test's integrity. For any organization, this translates to reduced risks and bolstered confidence in results, promoting a healthier workplace environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Park City, MT allows for drug detection up to 90 days post-consumption. This extended window provides employers with an all-encompassing overview of substance history. By capturing a broader timeframe, employers can better assess an employee’s long-term drug habits, ensuring that all facets of substance use are examined in-depth.

Incorporating hair follicle testing provides a depth of insight previously unavailable with urine tests. The capacity to investigate a 90-day window in Park City, MT means employers can uncover patterns in substance use. Thus, organizations are empowered with more robust data, enabling informed decision-making regarding potential employees' habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
