Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Park Grove, MT. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessment, with testing facilities across all cities nationally to conduct hair examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specialized hair testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly involve a hair follicle drug test. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine exams. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. A major advantage is the elongated detection span of drug usage, often reaching up to 90 days, making it hard to tamper due to the observed collection process. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use within an approximate three-month detection span. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the dimensions of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional features, and those exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. In instances where scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in laboratory processing for drug testing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive samples during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as one of the most complex methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used for the Confirmation of any positive results from Screening. Prior to Confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are washed if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug screening can reveal drug usage for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Historical pattern data: It presents a usage pattern over time, rather than recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are generally more costly compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
