In Pinesdale, Montana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether it's for hair drug or alcohol checks, our expertise in hair testing ensures that with centers across regions nationwide, we meet your needs. A segment of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body suffices in many scenarios. Our capabilities include drug analysis, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Of late, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for detecting substance use, favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists over standard urine tests. These tests are essential for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial orders, and people on probation. Hair follicle tests offer a crucial advantage: an expanded detection timeline of approximately 90 days, conducted under observation and highly resistant to tampering. Nonetheless, for recent drug use—within the preceding 5 days—urine tests remain unrivaled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand during its growth. When cut close to the scalp, hair samples can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above ten, 150mg of the hair is advised. It's best to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process where a sample is first introduced into the laboratory’s system. This step involves verifying that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for potential drug use. While Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening must undergo further Confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from the hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods such as urine or oral fluid tests, thus making hair drug analysis one of the more complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives undergo washing, as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited to a shorter time frame.
  • Resistant to tampering: The likelihood of cheating a hair drug test is minimal, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It can outline trends in substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs typically appear in hair about 5-7 days after being consumed.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
