At Accredited Drug Testing, we're committed to providing thorough hair follicle testing in Ponderosa Pines, Montana. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialty is hair analysis, accessible through our national network of centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed for a valid sample. Our tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options tailored to your needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a common procedure for substance screening. Many organizations, legal systems, and substance-abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by employers who enforce strict drug-use policies, as well as courts and probationary programs. A significant benefit of hair follicle tests is their extensive detection window, reaching back up to 90 days, making them hard to evade. Yet, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the accuracy standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a record of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it can indicate drug use over as much as a 3-month span. Collecting hair is straightforward, less susceptible to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation analyses. For EtG, additions, or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially introduced into a laboratory’s system, involving verification of proper sealing and shipping, assignment of a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any additional data entry not electronically recorded in the chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in many samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening demand further confirmation.

In the event a sample yields a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is utilized from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are pulled from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methods to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair identification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a pattern of drug use over a span, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs need about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test focuses on analyzing the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
