Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Power, Montana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair analysis is unparalleled. We operate testing centers across the entire nation that conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is required, though body hair may be used. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing methods.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Various employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method proves advantageous for entities with strict no-drug policies, legal institutions, and individuals on probation. A significant benefit is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, with collected samples being virtually tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine testing remains the most accurate for detecting recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. By obtaining samples close to the scalp, hair can reveal information up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for the use of alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the equivalent width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. It is beneficial to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair might be used. Mention of head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a laboratory's system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not provide.

Screening entails a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive finding must be confirmed to be legally defensible. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is carried out using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive are washed before undergoing Confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have briefer detection periods.
  • Challenging to compromise: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a usage pattern over an extended timeline, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Power, MT, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing through superior detection reliability and accuracy. While traditional tests may miss traces of drugs used over long periods, hair tests offer a comprehensive and detailed analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
